Email discussion groups and electronic newsletters are excellent way to receive announcements of grant awards and funding competition, as well as obtain advice from other fundraising professionals. The message below exemplifies the type of information that nonprofit representatives routinely share with each other:
Extracted from email posting by Merrimack development officer
“I worked with Keck several years ago on a new chemistry center project. Expect lots of questions, attention to detail,  and a focus on institutional stability.  Our President and Dean met with program officer Sandra Glass.  The process took many months to complete.  The reputation and qualifications of the chemistry faculty were key.  Keck wants you to do your homework.   Be ready with details, data, and stress how much of a PRIORITY this project is.  Also Keck does THEIR homework.  They will check your website to see if this project is presented as a priority.”
Charity Channel: Register at http://charitychannel.com/Forums/  Promoted as the oldest and largest online community of nonprofit professionals in the world, with more than more than 35,000 members participating in free nonprofit-sector discussion forums. Discussion groups include Accountability, Advancement, Advocacy, Annual Fund, Arts Gifts, Boards, Capital Campaign Talk, Charity Law, Charity Leader, Charity Start Ups, Christian Development, Consultants, Development Writing, Events, Gift Management, Gift Planning, Gift Prospecting, Grants, Health Gifts, K-12 Fundraising, Sponsorship, and Volunteer Issues. I suggest subscribing with the Digest Traditional format. The groups are funded through advertising but at a fairly unobtrusive level.
