The following resources are specific to San Luis
Obispo County, but might be of value for other California grantseekers
or anyone curious about the type of library material available.

Many excellent resources, although sometimes slightly outdated, are
available through branch libraries and the Black Gold lending system. Remember
to check both the reference section (REF 001.44, REF 061, REF 361) and
the regular stacks (try call numbers 361.7, 658.15, 001.44 and check the
electronic card catalog). Titles include the 1999 Annual Register of
Grant Support, 1997 Foundation Grants Index, The Proposal Writer's Swipe
File, Winning Grants Step by Step, Secrets Of Successful Grantsmanship:
A Guerrilla Guide To Raising Money, and Getting Funded: A Complete
Guide To Proposal Writing. The 1998 video “Grant Your Wish: Learn from
the professionals about how to write a successful grant proposal” is also
available. Remember that libraries welcome suggestions for new titles,
so make your needs known.

Anyone can use Cal Poly library print resources within the building,
but checkout privileges are restricted and access to some electronic databases
require a campus identification card. Members of the community can obtain
a borrowing card for an annual fee of $60.00. Any alumni association member
with any CSU campus qualifies for free borrowing privileges. If a
campus professor, staff member, or student is active in your organization,
perhaps they can assist with funding research. Note that many grantwriting
books or geared towards academic research grants. The following call numbers
are helpful for browsing the library stacks: HG177, HV41.2, HV41.9, LC243.A1,
and AS911.A2. Also ask for assistance from a librarian in the first floor
reference section. Titles include How To Write A Successful Research
Grant Application: A Guide For Social And Behavioral Scientists, Successful
Grant Writing: Strategies For Health And Human Service Professionals, Writing
Grants: A Complete Guide for Educators, Grant Winner's Toolkit: Project
Management And Evaluation, How Foundations Work, and The Seven Faces

This Cooperating Collection of the national Foundation Center offers
orientation sessions, foundation annual reports, seven computer terminals,
the FC Search database, general grantwriting books, and 990 tax forms.
Combining attendance at a nonprofit management seminar with research time
in the library would make a productive trip.

As one of five offices of the national Foundation Center, this funding
information center offers trainings, three full-time librarians, three
public computers with access to FC Search: the Foundation Center's Database,
and reference books. Worth a visit to San Francisco, particularly if you
combine research time with attendance at one of the workshops.
